Polaris Spirit Studios is a one-person indie game developer. The Studio is developing The Formless Plane, a series of narrative-driven RPG games set in a hybrid high fantasy/steampunk world. The series also takes influence from Kabbalistic mythology and Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea series.
Though its setting is full of magical curiosities and vicious monstrosities, the world of The Formless Plane has many parallels with our own reality. The series as a whole is an allegory for the climate crisis, and it will also depict the cost of resource extraction, consumerism, unchecked technological progress, and unfettered human expansion at the expense of nature. The empires and kingdoms of Adamah recklessly exploit an unstable and dangerous source of energy to gain power over the world and its peoples, just as fossil fuel corporations and governments do in our own world.
The first game in the series, The Crescent Archipelago, follows Zeljo Kane, a goblin scholar, as he journeys with his small mercenary crew across the eponymous archipelago. When a vision from the distant past appears at the centre of the archipelago, Kane and his crew must confront the history of ancient, imperialistic empire and learn of how azurite crystals - Adamah’s most coveted energy source – are distorting the very laws of nature. The Crescent Archipelago is available now as a free download, while the second game, The Golem-Maker’s Grimoire, is currently under development. Polaris Spirit Studios will launch Through the Pariah Abyss (the first chapter of The Golem-Maker’s Grimoire) in Spring 2023.
